Future Physician Leaders

The Future Physician Leaders (FPL) program helps students interact with their community among various locations within the Inland Empire. The aim of the program is to teach leadership skills while also providing knowledge and awareness to the community about health disparities. The Future Physician Leaders program was started in 2009, with the help of the community and Dr. Raul Ruiz, an emergency medicine physician at Eisenhower Medical Center.

Dr. Raul Ruiz noticed when meeting with various groups across Coachella that many students who were pursuing careers in medicine wanted to help under-served areas.

The FPL program was crafted when Dr. Raul Ruiz, and ten Coachella Valley students met at a local coffee shop. Today the FPL program has been recognized as a University of California School of Medicine pathway program, that helps the students of Southern California become physician leaders.

Dr. Raul Ruiz is a 36th district congressman and is still active within the program.
